New to Maryland

Post by dtb147 on Wed Dec 21, 2011 5:13 pm

I just moved to Maryland this summer. I am originally from PA and have relocated to the Baltimore area. Currently I own a 1971 Ford Maverick. It is a two door, automatic, v8, factory AC car. Lots of upgrades planned, but a lot of it is new to me and I'm trying to do most of it myself so it's slow going.... not to mention funds restricted due to purchasing a house. I'll see if I can get some pictures posted.

Maverick as I bought it:

Looks a lot like my first car:

New mirrors need painted, but they're installed:

New hood, carbon fiber repo of original Grabber hood:

I do have a few things in the works, but I'm doing some things I've never done before so progress is slow. I also need some recommendations for services in the area such as sand blasting or machine shop services.

Project 1: 1997 Explorer 8.8 rear with limited slip, 3.73 gears and disc brakes. Narrowed to bolt into the Maverick.
Status: Housing is narrowed. Needs sand blasted and painted, then reassembled, possibly with a trac-loc rebuild kit.

Project 2: 1993 5.0L from a Thunderbird, GT40 heads from a 1996 Explorer, Performer RPM intake.
Status: Block was checked and bored .030" over. Heads were planed about .006" for flatness and had 3 valve guides replaced, but are otherwise stock. Crank had to be turned as some of the rod bearings had scoring. Machine shop did not provide sufficient information. I've kind of stalled on this project. Basically I don't know what I'm doing and I need to find someone who's done this before to point me in the right direction. Right now I'm at the parts buying stage and there are hundreds of options and I just don't know how to pick parts that will work together well.

So... If anyone has any recommendations for services in the Baltimore area, or advice for building my first motor, I'd love to hear either. And if you want to lend a hand the fridge is always stocked.

Nice pile of stuff. That is a beautiful bevel on the axle tube! LOL. Reminds me of my days of being a pipefitter! Although I can't do heavy stuff anymore, I'm always up for wrenching!

Not sure where you are in the Baltimore area, but if you wanna journey into the suburbs some here is who did my motor:

Eldersburg Automotive Machine
(410)549-4166

His name is George, he has built plenty of big power motors as well as mild setups. He's definitely not the cheapest around though. I do have another contact I will post tonight...
